Baraqiel, The Living Vessel

May 1, 2018

The Watchers are being revived! I’m starting with Baraqiel.

After months of anticipation (on my part), I'm back to working on the black sheep of the Angelarium family. Getting back to doing some darker pieces has me excited. I've been doing moody black and white studies recently and it's been whetting my palette to start a full fledged piece like this.

The rituals Baraqiel performed were an object of fascination for both men and Angels alike. He brought to them the gift of tamed lightning. Despite the widespread appreciation for the fruits of this work, few volunteered to assist. Baraqiel was known not only for the power he commanded, but also his lack of respect for it. His fall was the first to prove that Watchers were not complete in their wisdom or their immortality.

Remph, Angel of Time

September 25, 2016

The sound of the water pulsed

Pressure pushed them on beat by beat
Marching forwards, dying upon the beach

And with each stroke they pulled the sand
Dragging it upon the stones
Polishing their faces smooth

Azazel, Angel of Sacrifices

June 2, 2016

Calling anything complete is hard. As much as I've been looking forward to calling the Watchers series complete, I feel like I can only say that I've completed my work on it. There are 20 in total and Azazel is the final one.

The most favored of the Watchers, Azazel has the farthest to fall. Even still, his legacy endures. Despite his fall, we still remember his wings. Long after their destruction, the memory sticks with us.

Samyaza, Angel of Pride

May 23, 2016

Samyaza's legacy is one that etched itself into the world forever. He stood at the head of the most powerful, wise and righteous band of creatures to ever walk the face of the earth. That sort of power would corrupt any of us. If only he hadn't succumb to it, there would be no bounds to what the Watchers could have achieved.

Despite the fact that Samyaza's actions brought humanity to the brink of destruction and doomed hundreds of angels to damnation. Despite this, I don't want to fully denounce his actions. His sin is pride, an emotion we all have a mixed experience with. It's a complicated feeling that comes with as much temptation as it does danger.

Ananiel, Angel of Storms

April 5, 2016

When you've realized that you've started something that you have no ability to stop, the horror starts to set in. I worked to give Ananiel this feeling. As I'm getting closer to the end of the Watchers series, I've mined my own experiences deeper and deeper rather than simply attempting to represent what each of the Angels represents on their surface.

As per usual, there will only be 25 copies of the LE print made for this piece.

I awaken and the sensation is much like drowning. My body, buoyant and pulsing in the low light, is tethered to the fallow earth. I reach out as if the sky were made of rungs, but the air resists me in all the ways possible without touch. My wings are damp with sweat and sculpted in repose, but both are lies as I’ve earned neither. Who is it that gives deception as gifts? I hate it here, this place that is somewhere in the middle. Where can I go if I am denied flight? How can I stay if I am denied presence? These questions fill the night air, crowding my wings and obscuring the light. But I know I am not the fog, but I also know that I am.

Chazaqiel, Angel of Fog

March 1, 2016

Chazaqiel is an angel of the clouds, fallen to earth. Unable to touch the ground and unable to ascend, she is caught between the pull of two powerful forces. To me, she is anxiety. A crushing force that drains the hues from everything it touches and empties the sky of its splendor. We all know the feeling within that fog. The world exists as we've always known it, but in the moment we stand within it, that truth becomes hard to realize.

I've made the prints of this piece highly limited. With a few pieces late last year quickly selling out with editions of 25 and then 50, I ventured to make every piece in series of 100. But extending the supply beyond the demand is not the point of creating a Limited Edition. I want to reward the most invested with an item of rare value. Those that subscribed on Patreon at the $74 tier have already claimed much of this run. The remaining copies are exclusively available on the store.
